Anxiety Rash: What It Is And How To Cope With It
For some people, an anxiety rash is a fairly common occurrence. They get nervous or uncomfortable in a situation and their skin begins to spontaneously break out in a rash that usually starts with the arms but then leads to the neck, chest and back quickly. It affects some people so severely that they tend to wear long sleeved clothing all of the time to avoid an embarrassing situation. Also, they spend a great deal of time worrying about the anxiety rash occurring that their stress can end up being an underlying cause for it.
Traditionally this rash occurs when the person is involved in some type of social situation such as on a date, meeting someone for the first time or making a presentation at work or school. For this reason, those that are affected may avoid these situations altogether, never really getting ahead at their job and not meeting new people.
How Anxiety Works
If you suffer from an anxiety rash from time to time, it may be helpful to understand why it happens in the first place. At the exact moment that you feel yourself stressed or in an uncomfortable situation, a chemical reaction takes place inside of your brain. Your brain then releases certain chemicals, including adrenaline. This adrenaline then flows through your bloodstream and reaches every cell within your body, triggering your body's flight-or-fight response.
The hormones that are produced from anxiety can give you an enormous burst of energy or a great amount of physical strength which is referred to as an adrenaline rush. This is what the body goes through to protect a loved one, fight off an animal in the wild or escape a dangerous situation.
Anxiety releases hormones that have the ability to cause rapid heartbeat, palpitations, elevated blood pressure, trembling, twitching, headache and of course, an anxiety rash. It can also trigger an outbreak of psoriasis, atopic dermatitis or seborrheic dermatitis, all common forms of acne or eczema. This is dangerous because they all create small open wounds that can allow microscopic organisms the opportunity to enter the body which can lead to an infection.
How To Cope
Whether stress is the sole or partial reason for your anxiety rash, finding helpful ways to deal with your daily tension is important to not only your skin but your health as well. Excessive worrying or mentally thought, negative statements can really take a toll on your immune system.
The first thing to do when you find yourself bothered by something is to look a couple of months into the future and decide if this same thing that is stressing you out going to bother you then. In the present moment things can often seam larger than life but when looking at the big picture, they are not things worth getting stressed to the point of an anxiety rash plaguing your body over.
You need to find a peaceful balance in your life and make time for not only things you enjoy doing but exercise as well. Exercise is the best way to combat stress because when you participate in it, endorphins are released and you have to feel better and even happy. If you have a presentation to give at work, consider taking a 15 minute break and going for a quick walk around the building. You will not only feel better, it may be enough to fend off an anxiety rash from presenting itself. Yoga is also extremely beneficial to manage stress, teaching a self appreciation and helping you to find your center while focusing on what is really important in your life.
There will always be some situation to arise in life that you are uncomfortable with but the goal is to master it instead of falling victim. It is always a good idea to keep an antihistamine on you to help with the itch if the situation arises and an oatmeal bath can be therapeutic as well. One out of eight Americans suffer from some type of anxiety disorder but you can overcome it.
